How DTF Transfers Work

A beginner-friendly guide

What are DTF transfers?

DTF (direct-to-film) transfers are full-color designs printed onto a special film and applied to clothing with heat and pressure. The artwork arrives ready to press—there is no weeding, layering, or cutting vinyl.

What can you use them on?

DTF transfers work well on cotton, polyester, cotton/poly blends, canvas, and many other heat-safe fabrics. They are a flexible choice for T-shirts, sweatshirts, totes, uniforms, and small-business apparel.

What equipment do I need?

A heat press is required. A household iron does not provide the consistent pressure and temperature needed for dependable adhesion. A pressing pillow or pad can help around seams, collars, and pockets.

How to press an LBK DTF transfer

315°F temperature 10–12 sec. first press Heavy pressure
  1. Pre-press. Press the blank garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  2. Position. Place the transfer design-side up where you want it on the garment.
  3. Press. Apply at 315°F for 10–12 seconds using heavy, even pressure.
  4. Warm peel. Let the film cool until warm instead of hot, then peel it away smoothly.
  5. Final press. Cover the design with parchment, butcher paper, or a Teflon sheet and press for 5 more seconds.

Always test first: Heat presses and garment materials vary. Adjust carefully if your garment manufacturer recommends a lower temperature.

Wash and care

Wait 24 hoursAllow the adhesive to cure before the first wash.
Wash inside outUse cold water and a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
Use low heatHang dry when possible or tumble dry low. Do not iron directly on the design.
Avoid dry cleaningHarsh chemicals and high heat can shorten the transfer’s life.

Before pressing: storage

For best adhesion, use transfers within 6 months. Keep them sealed, dry, cool, clean, and flat. Avoid hot vehicles, humidity, direct sunlight, creasing the film, or touching the printed adhesive.

Uploading your own artwork

  • Submit a transparent PNG at 300 DPI and final print size.
  • Use RGB color and solid, fully opaque artwork.
  • Use lines at least 0.5 mm (1.5 pt) thick when possible.
  • Avoid semi-transparent effects; they may print faded, spotty, or incomplete.

Files are printed as submitted, so check the artwork size, transparency, spelling, and background before ordering.

Do I need to cut or weed a DTF transfer?

No. Your transfer arrives printed and ready to position and heat press.

Can I use a household iron?

No. Use a heat press so the transfer receives consistent temperature and heavy, even pressure.

Will DTF work on dark shirts?

Yes. DTF includes an opaque white layer, so colors remain visible on both light and dark garments.

Can I press polyester?

Usually, yes. Because polyester can scorch or allow dye migration, check the garment maker’s heat limit and test one item first.

Why should I press it a second time?

The 5-second finishing press helps seat the transfer into the fabric and improves its feel and durability.
